History
Sam Greenberg’s history is truly vintage itself! Sam’s father
Benjamin arrived in London from Poland at the turn of the 20th
century. A tailor in Warsaw, he had nothing on arriving & so
began selling second hand clothing from a stall in the London’s
famous Petticoat Lane market in the East End. From a young
boy, Sam worked alongside his father, growing the business
into a `rag yard` collecting & wholesaling used clothing & textiles.
In 1935 he opened a shop selling men’s second hand tailored
clothing in the East End’s Cable Street, above which the family
lived. That shop closed in 1951, after which he concentrated on
wholesale, supplying other shops & markets with quality
second hand clothing. Imagine what vintage gems would have
been amongst that lot! Still family owned, Sam Greenberg
Vintage has returned to retail in recent years, carrying on the
proud tradition of selling direct to the public an ever changing
range of handpicked & carefully selected men and women’s vintage & retro clothing & accessories.
Our store in Kingly Court, just off
Carnaby Street in London’s West End,
even has some vintage fixtures &
fittings from the old Cable Street shop. We are currently looking for a new location to replace our recently closed Brick Lane store, so watch this space!
